Material Choices

This week I spent most of my time designing the insides of my toy. It requires a usb batter pack and gooseneck light, and I had to engineer a method to hold the battery in the back of the toy. I chose to laser cut the outline of my toy and glue the layers together. I also worked on designing the face of the toy made up of shadows.

First I made the piece more 3d to hold the batter pack, then added velcro to hold it in.

Second I worked on getting the shadow face to work. Left picture is the image I am going for, the first try wen horribly, after trial and error I figured out how to account for the kerf of the laser beam and get my pieces fitting snugly. There is still work to do here, I am wondering if it would be best to write a program that can make the pieces for me instead of trial and error mapping them to the shape they are supposed to align with.

Last I assembled and painted the prototype face, when I get the details worked out it will be dichroic film instead of solid shadows so the colors change as the head rotates.
