Lenticular Portals

Collaboration with Nicole Cabalquinto.

Studies of the transformative properties of the lenticular lens, magnifying and accentuating the contrast of degraded images manifested through the medium of custom led arrays. The portals consist of 6 pieces inspired by real world phenomena (the heavens, the earth, the sun, and humanity) which transport the viewer into a parallel dimension constructed of light. Typically a lenticular lens is used to animate still images that move depending on the viewing angle. In Lenticular Portals, the array of cylindrical ridges are used to magnify the individual pixels of the digital media behind it, creating a multiplicity of animated images as a viewer engages with the piece from different angles.

The pieces are indulgent, using almost 5000 leds, videos with excessive contrast and fully saturated color. Humans as a species are inherently drawn to light, and this series of works provides an explosive, excessive, sensory experience of moving and warping content.

LENTICULAR WAVE

An exploration of the physical bending of light through a box entirely constructed from lenticular lens. The top of the box is made of the lens arranged in a sinusoidal wave pattern, the edges of the box are perpendicular pieces of lenticular. When viewed from different angles, the light contained in the box appears to defy the laws of physics stretching and bending into an apparent infinite pattern that is quite difficult for the viewer to process, creating a sense of wonder and confusion. From other angles the light appears to be moving in waves, beams, and individual pillars of lights.

VESICA PISCIS

A ceiling piece consisting of two lenticular lenses rotating in opposite directions on motors in front of led arrays, creating an intersection which demonstrates the moire effect. Within the intersection distorted images become clarified at the center of the universe while distorted chaos surrounds the periphery. Vesica Piscis is based on a mathematical shape formed by the intersection of two disks with the same radius, intersecting in such a way that the center of each disk lies on the perimeter of the other. Within the context of sacred geometry, the Vesica Piscis represents creation or the “womb of The Universe".

LENTICULAR MIRROR

A rectangular "mirror" made of an array of LEDs behind a translucent sheet of acrylic on top melting into a lenticular lens which slowly arches towards the viewer.

The top of the mirror displays the viewer obfuscated in the real world, the bottom an inverted upside down image of the viewer in the parallel lenticular light dimension. A repurposing of my Low Res display

LENTICULAR SUNRISES

Three sunrise shaped pixel arrays displayed on top of laser cut mirror representing the view of the ocean as the sun rises. Showcasing an endless loop of the rising sun, the "screens" are programmed to cycle through a defined sequence of animations. The first works produced in the series, beginning the exploration into the properties of lenticular bending light from LEDs.
